The Balanced Assessment System (BAS)

PHASE I:

THE WEBINARS

The Balanced Assessment System (BAS)
THE WEBINARS

We are inviting you to participate in a series of five two-hour recorded webinars that are framed by the idea of ‘assessing on principle’. We define a principle as a ‘shared truth that brings order to the system’. We propose Five Assessment Principles as the organizing system for BAS, and we dedicate each Webinar to one Principle, and its related practices.

1. THE PURPOSE PRINCIPLE - Why Assess?

Wednesday, January 31st 14:00 to 16:00 EST

2. THE VALUE PRINCIPLE - How do we assess what really matters? with Alexis Wiggins

Wednesday, February 7th 14:00 to 16:00 EST

3. THE ALIGNMENT PRINCIPLE - How do we align our planning, teaching and assessing?

Wednesday, February 21st 14:00 to 16:00 EST

4. THE RELIABILITY PRINCIPLE - How do we gather and analyze a range of evidence to validate our conclusions? with Mike Rutherford

Wednesday, March 6th 14:00 to 16:00 EST

5. THE EQUITY PRINCIPLE- How do we ensure that assessment is fair to all learners? with Dr. Lee Ann Jung

Wednesday, March 20th 14:00 to 16:00 EST

THE CONSTRUCTION SITE

APRIL 19-20, 2024

The Balanced Assessment System (BAS)
THE CONSTRUCTION SITE

This is no ordinary ‘conference’. It’s a maker space for assessment architects. As the name implies, we are coming together to build. We are inviting school teams to collaborate to build solutions; e.g. rich assessment tasks, templates, and rubrics for us all to use in our schools. The exact ‘construction list’ will be determined during the webinars, so that we build the tools we all agree are needed most.

We’ll pool our ideas, talents, time and energy to build a better learning experience for all our students. School teams will use the BAS PLANNER to document their steps forward to truly learning-focused assessment in their own school. With individual participants, we’ll form vibrant collaborative teams so that everyone has learning partners on this important journey.
